Hercules in New York

Hercules_in_new_york_movie_poster

How can we create a Hercules game without talking about the biggest name in strong men in modern times: Arnold Schwarzenegger. (That’s the final time I’ll try to type his last name.) Arnold took a turn as Hercules when he was just a lad.

From wikipedia we learn many things about this film exploit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hercules_in_New_York

It is known for being the first feature film to star Arnold Schwarzenegger, who was about 23 years old when the film was produced. It is one of the films that Arnold Schwarzenegger admits regretting.

Well, I don’t regret Arnold doing this movie. It has provided me with a lot of joy. I love the fact that he changed him name at the height of his body building prowess and the best they could come up with was “Strong”.

Playing the film’s title character, Schwarzenegger, because of his long last name and to play off the name of fellow cast member comedian Arnold Stang, is credited as “Arnold Strong Mr. Universe”.

Due to his thick Austrian accent, Schwarzenegger had all his lines dubbed, although modern showings of the film have his audio track restored. However, even these restored showings cannot change the final scene’s lines that Hercules speaks to Pretzie over a small transistor radio, in a voice that is clearly not Schwarzenegger’s.

Oh Arnold. Little did you know that accent would be your key to fame later on.

In the move Hercules does battle a bear in central park as he does in our game- although ours is a half bear half giant named agrius and he puts up more of a fight. For teh most patr arnold battle gangsters.

Over all, Arnold’s Hercules was a bit more naive and definitely less blood thirsty than ours. I think you’ll have more fun with ours.

Hercules (Schwarzenegger) is sent to Earth where he finds true love and starts a promising career in the bodybuilder business.

A Very Hercules Christmas

Hercules: The Legendary Journeys

Hercules: The Legendary Journeys

Yeah… I can’t say there is really a good reason to relate Kevin Sorbo to Hercules: Curse of the Hydra other than that the Legendary Journeys had a holiday special and Hercules- being from ancient Greece and all doesn’t have a ton of Christmas related material. Our Hercules is pretty blood thirsty and full of vengeance. I guess he is trying to save Athens which is charitable.

In this charming Christmas episode, weak King Polonius receives a prophecy that a newborn baby will reign over his kingdom, and wicked Queen Maliphone convinces him to order the slaughter of all the babies in the kingdom to ensure their unborn child’s succession. Hercules shepherds the threatened babies and their mothers to safety.

Just in case you’ve forgotten the awesome cheesiness that was the Legendary Journey’s a primer has been embedded below. Enjoy it with holiday cheer in your heart!

Designing a 3D game for the iPhone using Unity

Underworld level 8 level design enemy map

Hercules: Curse of the Hydra. Underworld Level 8, level design enemy map

I have this rule about game design. Only innovate one new feature at a time in a game. You see, being a man of genteel nature and temperament I understand that you need to balance expectations and innovations in any new game development.

Your audience wants enough familiarity so they won’t be confused and enough of a new mechanic to create an engaging, fresh experience that sets the game apart. When you have a new player you have under 60 seconds to hook them and reward them in some way. If you leave a player dangling and confused for longer than that they will put down your game and never pick it up. You’ve missed your chance.

Now these innovations can take a number of forms: graphics, game play, platform. There are plenty of of chances t push the game too far.

A year ago when we started on Hercules I broke my rule. It turned out to be an odyssey that pushed us to create our best game to date.

The biggest leap was trying to create a massive real-time 3-D game for the iPhone.

1) It’s only a phone

Those were heady days a year ago. The fever for iPhone games was high. We decided to try expansive, massive, organic  3D worlds on the 1st gen iPhone. The thought was that all the other games out there at the time had fairly flat terrain and repeated their geometry. We wanted something epic. The levels were originally designed to wrap around in on themselves to provide great views and fighting over changing terrain. You can see the level design for level 9- the second stage of the underworld in the above picture and how we planned for enemy spawn points.

We were using Unity 2.0 at the time. Figuring out the pipeline for these levels was a major feat of trial and error. We’d done Unity games for iPhone before, but nothing on this scale. We were very limited by memory and processing power. In the end it turned out to be a huge victory. The game has a very distinctive feel. There were definite moments of panic though when a simple change it grouping could cause the frame rate to drop dramatically.

So we’ve got to make the level clear enough for people to know what to do, show them enough great graphics and keep the frame rate up and enough enemies on screen so it stays interesting. Who else needs drink?

2) Innovative controls

At the time and as a matter of convention, third person 3-D games tend to have a locked left hand joystick and set action buttons on the lower right. Our control mechanic allows for a relative joystick anywhere you place your thumb on the left. Just put down your thumb and drag.

Fight moves are trigger by slashes and taps on the right hand side with jumps and camera rotate reserved for the buttons there.

Our interface adapts to you. How you hold the device is up to you. How you controls Hercules is up to you. Try the game. It is intuitive and fun.

3) In-app purchase

It’s taken us a year to get the game out, but at the time it was quite a novel idea. Tired of the same weapons? Go ahead and pay to unlock them all plus a few bonus weapons you an’t get in game. At the time, in-app purchase wasn’t proven on the iPhone. We decided to go for it anyway. Granted, it’s not really a risk now. But at the time we thought it was hot sh**.

Hercules vs Medusa

It seems like there is a long history of Hercules kicking Medusa’s butt in his various media incarnations. Hercules: Curse of the Hydra follows in that grand tradition. That is- if you are good enough to even get to her, much less defeat her. Medusa is no push over and she will shoot you down with a rain of arrows just as soon as she’ll stare you into stone. You will need to be wiley and fast to capture her head.

In our long quest for all things Hercules we recalled the animated series from our youth: the Mighty Hercules. It’s done in that Speed Racer Style and with a certain self important swagger we can’t help but admire. Take a gander and play the clip below as we se Hercules come to grips with Medusa- or at least her head on a stick.

Here is Medusa in her lair in our upcoming game.

Medusa's Lair

Good luck in your battle with her. You’ll need it.

Hercules vs The Great Bear – or Lou Throws Stuff Into Space

Hercules – Lou Ferrigno Trailer
Uploaded by capitaomarveljr. – Independent web videos.

Through the glory of Netflix I came across the 1983 film version of Hercules starring the “incredible” Lou Ferrigno. We been working on our Hercules game for about a year now. I must have Googled the word Hercules 2000 times looking for reference. Never did I see a reference to this camp gem.

The trailer repeatedly refers to Lou as “incredible”. I’m guessing this is an attempt to remind anyone buried under a rock in 1983 that Lou spent some time as the Incredible Hulk. So in case you missed it Lou is still just plain is incredible.

In our game, Hercules: Curse of the Hydra, Herc battles Agrius who is an instrument of Hera in our epic saga.

AGRIOS & OREIOS (or Agrius and Oreus) were a pair of half-human, half-bear Thrakiangiants. They were transformed into birds by the gods as punishment for their cruel barbarity.

You can read about him more here: http://www.theoi.com/Gigante/GigantesAgriosOreios.html

Imagine my wonder and joy when I found Lou’s Hercules battling a Great Bear of his own!

The copyright holders of this precious piece of intellectual property won’t conceed for it to be embedded off of Youtube so you’ll have to go to the source:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqMfxmzVd28

The cheesiness of this battle between a weight lifter and a man in a crappy bear suit is actually the least of the truly “incredible” feats performed in the flick. The best part of this clip is when Hercules throws the bear into space and creates the bear constellation. Hercules proceeds to throw things into space all throughout the movie to great comic effect.

Actually space plays a huge roll in the film. All the gods live there. Hercules came from there. The evil guys dwell there. Space is literally where it’s at.

While watching it you can see the wheels turning in the heads of the movie executives: Star Wars meets Clash of the Titans meets the Incredible Hulk. How can it not be a hit? It does succeed at being INCREDIBLY funny. I recommend a viewing. then you can play our game afterwards and see how it stacks up.

Soon I’ll post about a modern Hercules Melodrama: Hercules in New York with the equally INCREDIBLE Arnold.

Playing the game as a mere mortal…

We’re heading down the home stretch of HCOTH and that means working our fingers to the bone making sure that Mr. Hercules has enough angry enemies and gods to make his quest more than challenging.
What does that mean for Hercules you ask? A lot of vengeful skeletons, goblins, creatures and other mythical beasts, each with their own fighting traits and strengths.
What does that mean for us? Removing cheats. Unlike Hercules, we are no longer blessed with omnipotent powers that allow us to jump through levels using any weapon we want or skipping past a level boss we don’t like. Now we have to face them head on. And damn, it’s challenging!

Being the son of a God is harder than you think...

I’m pretty proud that I can stab and slice my way through multiple attacks from up to 4 baddies at a time, but take away my trusted battle axe, and all of a sudden my veteran-swagger is no more. As you graduate each level, you earn some awesome weapons, but with cheats locked, battling through venemous desert scorpions becomes a Herculean task (pun intended)!

Testing a game that proves a challenge for even veterans as ourselves makes our hearts go pitter-patter. We’re stoked knowing this game will provide a true challenge for skilled hands…
